※October 11, 1942 H.F. Psychiatrist Basil Willing cracks the murder of a stage corpse in a [19th-century French playwright Victorien] Sardou revival. Remember Donald Lam joined the Navy? Just about the best Fair yet; and the best Fair is the best fare. Judson P. Philips [Hugh Pentecost], THE FOURTEENTH TRUMP (Dodd Mead, $2). Frederick C. Davis, DEEP LAY THE DEAD (Doubleday Crime Club, $2) ★Agatha Christie, THE MOVING FINGER (Dodd Mead, $2). Miss Marple, the omniscient spinster, finds a new reason for poison-pen letters. Passable second string Christie. ※November 1, 1942 Jeffery Farnol, VALLEY OF NIGHT (Doubleday Doran, $2.50). Phoebe Atwood Taylor, THREE PLOTS FOR ASEY MAYO (Norton, $2). Richard Powell, DON’T CATCH ME (Simon & Schuster, $2). ★Erle Stanley Gardner, THE CASE OF THE SMOKING CHIMNEY (Morrow, $2). Frank Duryea, staid, sensible D.A. of Santa Delbarra, again finds his domestic and professional life disrupted by his wife’s incorrigible grandfather. Gramps Wiggins (remember THE CASE OF THE TURNING TIDE?) is as racily refreshing as ever, especially on the joys of plain cooking and fancy drinking, but the dull and simple case which he solves is worthy neither of him nor of his creator. ※January 17, 1943 Arthur W. Suicide pact in 1940 England proves to be murder―if the murderer could have stood on thin air; the great H.M. [Sir Henry Merrivale] investigates, in a wheel chair and a Roman toga. Movingly human story woven around as pyrotechnically dazzling a plot as even Mr. Dickson has ever conceived. Collector’s item. Norbert Davis, THE MOUSE IN THE MOUNTAIN (Morrow, $2). Murdered woman comes to life as seen through [Alexander] Woollcott-like friend and the detective who finds himself falling in love with her image. Publishers call this a “psychothriller,” vile word, but meaning in this case a connoisseur’s item, for those who rejoice in [Raymond] Postgate, [Oscar] Wilde, or [Kenneth] Fearing. Subtle, sinister and swell. Hannah Lees & Lawrence Bachmann, DEATH IN THE DOLL’S HOUSE (Random House, $2). Dale Clark, FOCUS ON MURDER (Lippincott, $2).
